Paul Copan, in his book True For You, But Not For Me: Overcoming Objections to Christian Faith, writes:
All too often, I find Christians scurrying for cover when fired upon with expressions like [these listed below]… Although… these maxims have tended to be conversation-stoppers, they actually can open doors for further conversation. With patience, practice, prayer, and God’s grace, believers can offer thoughtful responses to faith-challenges. These responses are not intended to be given as what cynics might call ‘sassy answers to stupid questions,’ but rather as encouragements to reopening conversation in an engaging, relational setting.
Instructions
(1) Review the list of conversation-stoppers below, pick one, and then spend a couple minutes jotting down some notes on how you’d answer that particular conversation-stopper if thrown out by a friend.
(2) Then click on the conversation-stopper you chose, read Paul Copan’s concise response to the objection, and then compare it to your initial attempt.
(3) Finally, return to the group prepared to role-play your response in front of the group if given the opportunity.
