The deacon development cohort is designed to help you consider a potential call toward the diaconate. Through this training, we hope to equip men and women in leadership and ministry skills. There is no guarantee, expectation, or understanding that someone will be installed as a deacon after this cohort. However, we believe this cohort will be instrumental in your development and growth as a spiritual leader.

For the Deacon Development Cohort, we will meet on the following dates:

September 14
October 12
November 16
February 8
March 8
April 12

If you would like to participate this cohort, you must register by Wednesday, June 10.

Upon registering, you will be mailed a physical copy of a written personal assessment for you to fill out. The assessment asks questions regarding your story, character, home life, and calling. If you are married, your spouse will answer a few questions about your character. This assessment must be returned using the provided self-addressed envelope and postmarked by Monday, July 13.

We understand that many who are invited into this cohort may not fully understand what a deacon is. In order to get us on the same page, we are asking all participants to read the short book Deacons by Matt Smethurst prior to completing the personal assessment. This book can be read in approximately 2 to 2.5 hours, and it gives a biblical vision for the office, explaining why deacons matter for the local church. Once you register for the cohort, we will send you a copy of this book, free of charge. The audiobook is also available for you to purchase on Audible.

Following the assessment, your congregational elders and deacons will schedule an in-person meeting with you and your spouse (if applicable). The purpose of this meeting will be to assess your readiness for the cohort, identify specific areas of strength and growth, determine next steps in your development, and answer any questions you may have about the cohort.
