India being my birth place and native country holds a special place in my heart, although the land has had the privilege of early Christian witness the population of India still remains largely unreached. At 1.2 billion and rising, India is the second most populated country in the world. Though there are reports of people coming to know Christ in large numbers and thousands of churches being planted, the reality is that the church in India is still small. Only under 6% of the Indian population identifies as Christians.

In addition to this, increased employment opportunities in the cities have caused a major population explosion and culture shift in Urban India in the last decade or so. Consumerism and individualism now largely shapes the new urban culture. Although India claims to be a deeply spiritual nation, many view their relationship to God in terms of works-based performance and/or experience-seeking encounters.

With such a large unreached population in the country, there is a huge need for missional engagement in all parts of the country. However, Urban India in particular has a great need for Gospel centered, disciple making, missional church communities.

Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay, is the capital city of the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is a global city with an approximate  population of 23 million people, out of which the number of evangelical Christians in the city is estimated to be about 2%. Mumbai’s culture is a blend of cosmopolitan city life dotted with deep-rooted traditional influence. Mumbai’s history as a major trading center has led to a diverse range of cultures, religions, and communities coexisting in this city.

This global city has approximately 6-9 million skilled working professionals, a large number of this consist of young, English-educated, working professionals, who are the influencers and shapers of the city. This group of people are united by their shared experience of the city and busy modern lives. This group of urban dwellers are largely unreached. We earnestly desire by God’s grace to mobilize a gospel-centered, missional church-planting movement to reach this population of people in this beautiful city to the glory of God.

We hope to do this by multiplying gospel-centered, missional communities that love God, love neighbors, and work for the good of the city.

As Indian Americans, my wife and I are thrilled at the call to invest our lives in seeing the gospel of Christ transform as many lives in Mumbai as God would give us the privilege to see. As you read through these pages, we hope you get a sense of the massive call Jesus has laid on us. We invite you to consider what it will take to help us respond to this conviction and marvel with us at God’s faithfulness.

We sincerely hope that God the Holy Spirit fills your heart with faith and moves you to participate in this mission with us in prayer and giving.

We pray God’s richest blessing for you.

Christ is all,

Cornerstone Church Planting Team

GATHERED COMMUNITIES OF WORSHIP: Each Sunday, Cornerstone Mumbai will gather as a community to remember together and remind each other the Gospel of Jesus Christ in singing, gospel-centered preaching, and the experience the celebration of the Lord’s Supper together.

GOSPEL COMMUNITIES ACROSS THE CITY: We believe the life of the local church extends far beyond the weekly corporate gathering on Sunday. We value gospel community as a vital expression of a local church of people made in the image of God.

MULTIPLICATION: We believe one way to measure the impact of discipleship is through multiplication. Cornerstone is committed to multiplying gospel communities and leaders by being a church that plants churches.

LIVING IN THE TENSIONS: We believe God is inviting us to stand in some beautiful tensions in Scripture, some of which include spirit and word, mission and discipleship, church gathered and church scattered, sinner and saint.

CHURCH FOR THE CITY: We are committed to live as citizens of the kingdom of Christ and participants in the promise of renewal of all things. We commit to being a faithful gospel presence in a fast-paced, progressive city. We are committed to being partakers with Jesus in the flourishing of the city.

PRAYING PEOPLE: One of the beautiful implications of the gospel is that, through the finished work of Jesus Christ, we are welcomed as sons and daughters into the family of God, sealed with the Spirit through whom we experience our adoption. Prayer is no longer merely a religious activity, but a joyful communion with God. We desire to be a people of prayer before anything else. We are committed to making bold, unceasing prayer a part of all our gatherings.

HOSPITABLE PEOPLE: We believe that, just as Jesus welcomes us into the family of God, our gatherings should be places where people experience the kindness of God.

GOSPEL-CENTERED: We believe who we are and what we do as a Church is completely centered around the gospel of Jesus Christ. We believe the gospel is not just the entrance into the Christian life, but is the very essence of the Christian life.

BIBLE HONORING: We believe the Bible is the Word of God, infallible and without error in the original manuscripts, written by men under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, and that it has supreme authority in all matters of faith and conduct.

SPIRIT EMPOWERED: We love and believe the Bible, and therefore we believe in being a Spirit-empowered church. We do not believe these two things are at odds with one another. We believe faithful Biblical stewardship calls for these two things to fit together.

KINGDOM FOCUSED: As a church focused on the kingdom of God, we want to see the kingdom spread by planting churches locally and globally. The kingdom of God advances as more churches are living under the lordship of Jesus.

HONOR THE IMAGO DEI: We believe that when God created human beings, He designed them to put on display and reflect his own image. In his brilliance, he designed two genders: male and female. Both men and women equally display the glory and image of God. Men and women are created with equal value, worth, and dignity as image bearers of God.

“To belong to Jesus is to embrace the nations with him.” —William Carey, Missionary to India

We believe the single most valuable contribution you can give to this work is prayer, and we cherish it. Please email us at to join our prayer team.

We would ask you to consider partnering with us financially. We are seeking partnership from churches, individuals, and organizations who share our vision for reaching the nations and have a heart that longs to see people hear the gospel in the city of Mumbai and the nation of India.

This church plant will take more than a few leaders. We are praying for a team of 40-50 people who would be willing to move to Mumbai for several years at least to help this new church get started. Please ask God if he might be sending you to join this team.

We would love to talk with you! You can contact us at
